For my thesis, I have created a collection of handbags using traditional textile techniques to create contemporary patterns. This collection is called Baby, and is inspired by a variety of different vintage bags that I have studied for shape, size and pattern. I have always been a bag lover and I wanted to create a unique collection that was entirely designed by me. I have created a unique collection of bags that all have the same silhouette made of different materials. There are seven bags in the size of nine inches by eleven inches including the handle. I wanted to create these bags with the idea of customization in mind; because the base of each bag is the same it leaves possibilities for different colours and patterns on the rest of the bag, which could be customized and made to order. This collection includes a variety of different techniques including machine knitting, weaving, felting, sewing and laser cutting. The base of all of the bags is leather, the handles are laser cut in either acrylic or ply-wood, the woven pieces are cotton and the felted knits are made from lamb’s wool. I asked myself “What makes a successful bag?” and allowed this question to drive my work. I chose a size that fits the necessities in my eyes; wallet, keys, phone, lip balm, mints etc. I tested different handle materials and shapes in order to have a comfortable handle. This purse is meant to be everyone’s favourite special purse, not for everyday use, a purse that will be taken care of and used as the perfect accessory to a cute outfit. I wanted them to be staple bags that can follow in the footsteps of the iconic bags that inspired me.
