Yusra Mukhtar

Jashn-e-Watan in Urdu translates to Celebration of Land. I was born in Pakistan and came to Canada when I was two years old. Pakistan has a culture that is both beautiful and enchanting. But growing up I fell prey to the global catastrophe of cultural globalization. I was convinced that the culture I come from was an embarrassment, a hindrance, something I need to erase from my life. If anything, turning my back to my roots only made me feel more lost. I started on a journey of soul-searching, and self-discovery. And even though I feel like this is a journey that is ever evolving, and perhaps never ending, I have come to a point in my life where I am whole heartedly claiming what I once denied myself, a chance to discover and explore my culture. And this project illustrated that journey.
