The research subject of my thesis project is the contemporary Chinoiserie style. I was born and raised in China, and I have received most of my education in the west. I am experiencing the cultural differences between the west and the east, but also embracing the similarities between both cultures at the same time.
For my thesis project, what I create is a pattern design collection of Chinoiserie style within a refined contemporary setting. The goal of my collection is to use my own observation and aesthetics to create a contemporary style that combines Chinoiserie style and traditional Chinese style together.
I was inspired by the similarities and differences of traditional Chinese style and the traditional 18th century chinoiserie style. I created my own motifs based on both styles at first, and each motifs have the special significances in traditional Chinese culture. Color and imagination are the way how I express my designs in contemporary .
This collection contains 20 repeat pattern designs, and it will demonstrate the applicability of the newly-created chinoiserie patterns to an interior area. I hope the viewers could see the combinations of Chinese style and chinoiserie style, also traditional and contemporary from my collection.
