Madeleine Leblanc

This thesis work Arachne investigates identity and the exhibition of artifice, imagining a Greek myth into surreal forms. Informed by a combination of historical tailoring and experimental techniques, the story is broken down into three figures; the mortal Chorus, the God Athena and the monstrous Spider.
Each elaborate costume was made by hand. From drafting to hand finishings, crinolines and needle felted masks, each laborious component was carefully and methodically created with a combination of research and experimentation.
Winner of the Michèle Cowan Memorial Award, the Nora E. Vaughan Award and the MAAD Program Medal.
